Public invited to share information about Milford

The general public are being asked to share their information and knowledge about Milford-Piopiotahi and the rest of Fiordland, as part of the Milford Opportunities project.
Opus/Xyst project leader Michele Frey said the team has started work on researching what is currently known about Milford and the corridor, and what else is needed. To do this, the team will be working closely with agencies and stakeholders to gather relevant information.
“However, we thought members of the public might also have useful information that can help us get the full picture, so we have created a public survey for people to fill out, and also an email for people to send in any reports or data they have,” Ms Frey said.

The survey will close on 1 May.
“We want to develop a plan that will ensure the Milford experience is outstanding for years to come and continues to create benefit for Fiordland National Park, the Southern regions and the whole of New Zealand, so using as many ways as possible to find out information is important,” she said.
Opus/Xyst will take up to six months to gather all information it can, reporting back to the governance group as it moves through the research.
“This work will all help us to understand the people, the place and the experience,” she said.
As this phase finishes, any gaps in information will be filled through further research. Ultimately this information will feed into an overall masterplan which will create a framework for the future of Milford Sound and the access corridor to enhance it and the wider national park.
This project is separate to the Fiordland National Park Management Plan review which also starts this year. However, its findings will be considered during the plan review process.
